About me

Most of my time is spent between three worlds — scientific research, university teaching, and large IT projects that have to actually work in practice.

I work at the University of Žilina, at the Department of Communications within the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications. I teach in the Electronic Commerce and Management study programme.

That is the formal part. The rest is more interesting.

What I enjoy about it

The digital economy is one of the few fields where theory and practice chase each other over months rather than decades. Bitcoin, artificial intelligence, digital payments, e-commerce — first there is a lot of talk, and only then does it become clear what actually works. My job is to find out the second part and say it in plain language.

I am not a programmer. But I understand technology well enough to try it myself, and well enough to translate what a developer says for a manager — and the other way round. That translation usually turns out to be the hard part.

Research

I work on three areas over the long term: Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence and digital tools in higher education, and e-commerce together with digital transformation. What interests me is also what connects them — digital payments, data, user behaviour, and the way a new technology turns from a fringe curiosity into ordinary infrastructure.

Alongside my own papers I review manuscripts for scientific journals and serve as guest editor of a special issue on cryptocurrencies and digital cash. Reviewing is thankless but useful work: it forces you to read someone else’s text more strictly than you read your own.

Teaching

I supervise and examine bachelor’s and master’s theses. What I ask of students is a concrete analytical problem and a measurable result — not a broad title and thirty pages of description. The best theses happen when a student picks a topic that genuinely annoys or fascinates them, and then takes it apart.

Beyond the department

I contribute to public-sector information systems — project roles, testing, deployments, and the communication between the project, the ministry and the schools. It is a different world from academia: deadlines are harder, mistakes more visible, and users more direct. It is also the best running check on whether my ideas about digitalisation hold up outside a paper.

I have been attending international conferences on university information systems since 2005, when I first travelled to EUNIS in Manchester. Almost everything has changed since then except one thing: universities are still working out how to make technology useful rather than merely present.

And when I can, I travel. Some of what I see along the way ends up in the Journal.
